Home Video #1

A few years ago, I pulled out a dusty box labeled "Home Video".  It was filled with VHS tapes from various weddings, birthday parties, and especially family vacations.  I think most people my age have a box like this in a back closet or in our parent's attic.  I popped a tape into the VHS player (also dusty) and there I was, a five year-old mess playing basketball with the local Masai from the village behind my house (http://vimeo.com/7548724).  Tape after tape, I couldn't believe how many adventures my family went on and how valuable those memories are to me.

But why shoot on VHS now?  I've spent a good deal of time with the folks from Granola, and I can honestly say that they are like family to me.  So when I saw a VHS camera at the thrift store, I got an idea.  I wanted to get back to the art of making Home Videos, of capturing Granola adventures in a simple and authentic way (even if it means talking awkwardly from behind the camera).  It may not be flashy or exotic, but that's not really what being a Granola is all about anyway.  We're a family of people who love the outdoors.  And VHS... well, I think it will be a great way to get started on a home video collection.

Check out our first little VHS home video, and welcome to the family.
